Why Is It So Bad To Be Single?

04:10

It's New Years Eve and Facebook and Instagram seem to be full of depressive quotes telling me that you're a failure if you're single and implying that it's embarrassing if you're going into the New Year without a significant other.

Memes and 🤖: This guy was raised
by Gorillas, lived in a forest
 and didn't know human language
 and still got a girlfriend
And I'm still singleImage result for alone for new years eveImage result for all i did this year has become more single    Image result for If ur worried ur not gonna get a New Year's Eve kiss just remember

I literally just don't get it...why? Why do people think that your life's over if you're not in a relationship?! I don't understand why people feel the need to ridicule the single life.
As someone who's just come out of an abusive relationship, I couldn't be happier to be free and single. I understand that maybe the majority of people do want a relationship, it's natural to want that but equally if you're not in a relationship, why should that mean that you shouldn't enjoy life as much as if you had a bf or gf? You should still enjoy every moment of life- why should New Year only be enjoyed by couples? Why is it sad if you don't have someone to kiss at that specific second when the clock strikes midnight? In fact, for the last 3 years I've spent New Year as a couple and last year I spent it with my boyfriend and his family. His sister spent the whole entire night crying because she wasn't happy in her relationship, meanwhile her boyfriend was mortified, packed his bags and left...Far from the 'perfect' midnight kiss. There's so much pressure for New Year to be the 'best night ever' but the reality is usually far from being determined by if you're single or not.

Of course, being in a relationship can be the best thing in the world, but equally no one seems to understand the value of being on your own, being your own person and independent. As soon as I got into my first relationship, which was great, of course I was so happy but I specifically remember thinking that I did miss my independence- suddenly you have another person to 'look after' and worry about and you forget how easy life was before when you could literally do whatever you want, whenever you want! I know these memes probably started out as a little joke but honestly, people should embrace being single, it doesn't mean that you should enjoy life any less than if you had a boyfriend.

Personally, I'm so glad that I can go out tonight and not worry about a scary man and making him angry by doing whatever it is that may annoy him as I desperately try to make him happy. I can go to sleep tonight and actually relax instead of being terrified that he may hear me breathing which of course would naturally make him livid.

Yes relationships can be...and are supposed to be great, but there's a lot to say for the single life too and instead of mocking it, embrace it.
